Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Frelimo president and President of Mozambique Daniel Chapo said today that the post-election demonstrations in Mozambique were part of a \u201cglobal strategy\u201d to \u201cput an end to\u201d political parties of former African liberation movements, but called for \u201cintrospection\u201d within the party.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last elections on October 9 (…) were held in a context marked by strong internal and external pressures, aimed at removing Frelimo from power at all costs, as part of a global strategy to put an end to the parties or former national liberation movements throughout the southern African region,\u201d said Daniel Chapo at the opening of the 4th ordinary session of the Frelimo Central Committee, which will take place over three days in Matola, on the outskirts of Maputo.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, inspired by the slogan \u2018Victory must be prepared and victory must be organised\u2019, Frelimo prepared and organised itself so that victory in all phases of the electoral process would become a reality (…). Frelimo\u2019s high level of preparation and organisation enabled its candidate to face and defeat the other candidates, ensuring that the genuine will of the citizen voter expressed through the votes cast in the ballot box prevailed. Comrades, this is the true electoral truth,\u201d Chapo added.<\/p>\n

Daniel Chapo was elected fifth President of the Republic of Mozambique on 9 October, in a context of strong opposition and social unrest, in protests called by the then presidential candidate Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane, who did not recognise the election results, and during which more than 360 people died in five months.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe violent, illegal and criminal demonstrations carried out by a certain defeated candidate, who has been clearly identified, must be the subject of a frank and dispassionate analysis as to their true causes. For this analysis to lead us on the path to re-establishing effective and lasting political stability, it is essential to recognize that, in addition to external factors, we need to do some introspection within our party to identify and correct any deviations and failures,\u201d Chapo requested.<\/p>\n

Insisting that \u201cFrelimo and its candidate won\u201d the general elections of October, 2024, Chapo stated: \u201cThe violent, illegal and criminal demonstrations are not supported by the electoral results, but are simply part of a meticulously prepared agenda to destabilize the country and, above all, strangle our economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the same speech, the party leader and head of state expressed \u201cappreciation and recognition\u201d to the members of the Central Committee, to the militant supporters and to the population for the determination shown in the post-election period \u201cin defence of the hard-won victory.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the Central Committee meeting, Chapo called for a \u201cdeep reflection on the challenges facing Frelimo today, especially in the area of electoral processes\u201d, given that, among other points, the report from the Election Preparation Office will be analysed.<\/p>\n

This session will run until Saturday at Frelimo\u2019s Central School and will mainly analyse internal management matters, including reports from the party\u2019s structures and the proposed Activity Plan and Budget for 2025.<\/p>\n

According to information from Frelimo, the meeting will also analyse the proposal for the Government\u2019s Five-Year Programme (2025-2029) and the proposal for the Economic and Social Plan and State Budget for 2025, both of which have already been presented to the Assembly of the Republic.<\/p>\n

The 254 full members of Frelimo\u2019s Central Committee are meeting again after, unsurprisingly, in February they elected Daniel Chapo as party president and Chakil Aboobakar as secretary-general, following a vote in the main body between congresses.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican president took over as leader of Frelimo on 14 February, having been the only candidate to succeed Filipe Nyusi, who had led the country and the party for ten years.<\/p>\n
