{"id":809,"date":"2021-06-14T16:54:35","date_gmt":"2021-06-14T16:54:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/?p=809"},"modified":"2021-06-14T16:54:35","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T16:54:35","slug":"unhcr-seriously-concerned-about-civilian-safety-in-cabo-delgado","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/files\/unhcr-seriously-concerned-about-civilian-safety-in-cabo-delgado","title":{"rendered":"UNHCR \u2018seriously concerned\u2019 about civilian safety in Cabo Delgado"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-mozambique:<\/strong> The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) is \u201cseriously concerned\u201d about the safety of civilians in northern Mozambique, where the \u201carmed conflict and insecurity\u201d in Palma \u201ccontinue to displace thousands of people,\u201d the organisation said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The UN agency noted that, \u201ctwo and a half months after a brutal attack by non-state armed groups,\u201d which attacked the town of Palma, \u201cpeople are fleeing daily in a desperate search for safety, both in Mozambique and across the border with Tanzania,\u201d according to a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFleeing people have reported to UNHCR staff that the situation in Palma remains very unstable, with regular shooting at night and house torching,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n<p>Some 70,000 people have fled Palma since March 24, bringing the total number of displaced people in Cabo Delgado province to nearly 800,000, according to estimates by humanitarian organisations and the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>Constant insecurity has forced thousands of families to seek refuge in the south of Cabo Delgado and Nampula provinces. \u201cThe districts of Nangade, Mueda, Montepuez, Ancuabe, Metuge, Balama, Namuno, Chiure, Mecufi, Ibo and Pemba continue to register new arrivals [of refugees] every day,\u201d UNHCR stresses.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people \u201care trapped in insecure areas around Palma, with restricted humanitarian access,\u201d the organisation stresses. \u201cMany have attempted to cross the river marking the border with Tanzania in search of international protection,\u201d it adds.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Mozambican border authorities, more than 9,600 displaced people have been forcibly repatriated through the Negomano border post since January this year. Some 900 were literally \u201cpushed\u201d back to Mozambique in just a few days from June 7-9, according to the UN agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUNHCR teams have been supporting people arriving in desperate conditions, many of them separated from their relatives,\u201d it stressed.<\/p>\n<p>The displaced Mozambicans, forcibly repatriated by the Tanzanian authorities, \u201cend up in a dire situation at the border and are exposed to gender-based violence and health risks, as many sleep outdoors at night under extreme cold, without blankets or shelters,\u201d UNHCR points out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is an urgent need for emergency relief items, including food,\u201d the organization stresses.<\/p>\n<p>UNHCR reiterates the call for \u201cthose fleeing the conflict to have access to territory and asylum, and in particular that the principle of no forced return is respected.
