Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Executive Secretary of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), Elias Mpedi Magosi, said on Thursday that it was important to assess, on the ground, the current status of the SADC Military Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM), in order to draw up actions to be improved so that it meets its objectives in the country.<\/p>\n

Magosi was speaking to the press at the end of a meeting with President Filipe Nyusi on the third stop on his tour of the 16 member SADC countries following his appointment as the organisation\u2019s executive secretary.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came to see, first hand, how the SADC Military Mission is doing and, in this process, I will maintain contacts with the Mozambican authorities to assess their impressions and what can be improved so that it fulfils its objectives,\u201d Magosi said.<\/p>\n

SAMIM was launched on 9 August and became fully operational in early September, joining Rwandan troops helping Mozambique fight terrorism in Cabo Delgado province. The SADC Military Mission in Northern Mozambique was subsequently extended until 2022.<\/p>\n

Magosi said that this courtesy visit to Filipe Nyusi, in his capacity as outgoing President of SADC, also served to share ideas on regional integration and, at the same time, test the Mozambican government\u2019s feeling on the process.<\/p>\n

\u201cI came to introduce myself as the executive secretary of SADC, and talk about the things that I see and feel as being important to lead the organization, particularly towards regional integration,\u201d he stressed.<\/p>\n

The other items on Magosi\u2019s agenda are a visit to the humanitarian operations centre in Nacala, Nampula province, to see how it is proceeding and how best to make it operational.<\/p>\n

Also yesterday, the head of state received the ambassadors of Saudi Arabia, Abdulmalik Alyosfi, and of Vietnam, Le Huy Hoang, who delivered their farewells at the end of their diplomatic missions in the country.<\/p>\n
