Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Defence Minister Jaime Neto says that security has been re-established in the central area of the country, although the Defence and Security Forces remain on the alert for possible further attacks.<\/p>\n

Jaime Neto considers the possibility of Mariano Nhongo\u2019s men mounting attacks in the future \u201cminimal\u201d, given that, by the time of his death, the leader of the Junta Militar had few remaining allies.<\/p>\n

The Defense and Security Forces shot and killed Mariano Nhongo on 11 October.<\/p>\n

Minister Neto said this Friday that security had been re-established in Manica and Sofala provinces.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe security situation in the central area tends to return to calm, but the work of the Defence and Security Forces continues, in order to be able to clarify the entire area and see whether or not there is still any threat, but so far, the results have been positive,\u201d Neto said.<\/p>\n

Jaime Neto considers the possibility of Mariano Nhongo\u2019s guerrillas in the centre of the country regrouping and retaliating small because, by the time of his death, the leader of the Renamo Military Junta was a man to all extents and purposes alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe believe that Mariano Nhongo was practically alone, or with only a handful of people, and I believe that, with his death, they know they represent an agenda that has nothing to do with them, nor with Mozambicans or the country\u2019s development,\u201d the Minister of Defence said.<\/p>\n

The situation could improve further, since \u201cthe Defence and Security Forces are still on alert, and working to see if there is any threat of regrouping by members of the Renamo Military Junta,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The minister was speaking after the accreditation of military attach\u00e9s from France, Spain and Germany, from whom he sought better coordination of actions and efforts in the fight against such transnational crime as terrorism, drug and person trafficking and cyber-crime.<\/p>\n
