Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Pequenos Libombos dam authorities in Maputo have increased discharges by more than 130%, to free capacity to accommodate increased flows during the upcoming rainy season, the latest Famine Early Warning (Fews) Network summary reads.<\/p>\n

Because of high rainfall at the beginning of the year, which saw flooding and roads cut in the vicinity of Maputo, the dam is at 91% capacity, even at the start of the rainy season.<\/p>\n

The current rainy season, extending to April 2022, poses a moderate to high risk of flooding, which could lead to crop loss in lowland areas, including the Maputo, Umbel\u00fazi, Incomati, Limpopo, B\u00fazi, P\u00fangu\u00e8, Savane, and Licungo river basins, the report notes.<\/p>\n

According to the latest seasonal weather forecast, central Mozambique may experience more rainfall than the rest of the country in the forthcoming rainy season, continuing a pattern seen in previous years.<\/p>\n

According to the same source, the authorities are planning a new meteorological centre for the area, with support from the African Development Bank (ADB). Scheduled to enter operation by 2024, it is hoped it will increase the accuracy of forecasts and alerts.<\/p>\n
