Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario has said that Mozambique alone will never be able to mobilise the necessary resources for mitigation and adaptation to climate change, the impacts of which have become more frequent and severe.<\/p>\n

Addressing on Monday the launch of the review of Mozambique\u2019s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in the Scottish city of Glasgow, venue of the COP26 climate summit, Rosario said the country needs resources to finance its adaptation and mitigation actions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn order to answer the current dynamics caused by climate change, after the Paris Conference, the country reviewed its first NDC for 2020-2025,\u201d do Rosario pointed out. He also urged other stakeholders to join the government to ensure an effective implementation of the NDC, of pivotal importance for facing climate change.<\/p>\n

Rosario also stressed that Mozambique is committed to diversifying its energy mix and adopting the forms which are predominantly clean and environmentally friendly such as hydroelectric, wind and solar sources.<\/p>\n

Mozambique, Rosario highlighted, is located on the path of extreme weather events which, in recent years, have become frequent and severe. Over the last 40 years, the country has seen 40 tropical cyclones, 20 floods and 21 droughts.<\/p>\n

In 2019, between March and April, Mozambique was struck by the Idai and Kenneth tropical cyclones and while it was still recovering from the severe impacts of those storms, it was again hit by the cyclones Chalane and Eloise.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese events demonstrate an increase in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events which affect the country nowadays,\u201d Rosario stated.<\/p>\n

The extreme weather events caused by climate change, Rosario said, result from greenhouse gas emissions, to which the country has made very little contribution, but they affect the government efforts to address national priorities, especially the food security crucial for poverty reduction.<\/p>\n

To address the impacts of climate change, Mozambique has been implementing a wide range of measures with technical and financial support from its partners.<\/p>\n

The NDC Partnership co-Chairperson, Pearnel Charles Junior, backed up the Prime Minister and pledged to continue mobilising technical and financial support, to support countries such as Mozambique mitigate, adapt and recover from the impacts of climate changes.<\/p>\n
