Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican lawyer Elvino Dias, who was murdered in Mozambique in 2024 while representing the country\u2019s presidential candidate Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane, is this year\u2019s winner of Portuguese NGO ProPu\u0301blica\u2019s Nelson Mandela Award, the association\u2019s president told Lusa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis year\u2019s recipient of the Nelson Mandela Award is lawyer Elvino Dias, who was murdered in October last year while he was representing Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane, a candidate in Mozambique\u2019s presidential elections,\u201d said Agostinho Pereira de Miranda, president of \u2018ProPublica\/Law and Citizenship\u2019 in an interview with Lusa.<\/p>\n

With the choice of this year\u2019s award winner, the association wanted to \u201chonour the example of a lawyer who lost his life while carrying out his duties\u201d, but also to \u201cexpress (…) solidarity with Mozambican lawyers and, in general, with African lawyers who carry out extraordinarily important duties in the defence of human rights\u201d, doing this work \u201cin very, very difficult circumstances\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Arguing that \u201ca lawyer can never be confused with the interests of his client\u201d, because \u201clawyers represent people and not causes, which belong to their clients\u201d, the president of PorPu\u0301blica \u2013 Direito e Cidadania emphasised that it would not be \u201ceven legitimate\u201d to say that the murder of Elvino Dias was motivated by political convictions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn fact, we don\u2019t even know what his political convictions were,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n

Agostinho Miranda said that Elvino Dias \u201cwas murdered because he represented someone uncomfortable with power\u201d and he was murdered in a way that the Mozambican Judges Association considered \u2018heinous\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican lawyer was the representative of the Democratic Alliance Coalition (CAD) and legal advisor to the then presidential candidate Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane and, a few days before the murder, he had publicly announced that he was collecting evidence of the electoral fraud claimed by his constituent.<\/p>\n

For Agostinho Miranda, what Elvino Dias demonstrated \u201cwas a characteristic that no lawyer can fail to have, civic, physical and moral courage\u201d, qualities that marked his career, as well as \u201cpride in what he did, despite having been threatened repeatedly\u201d, and persistence, because he never gave up on cases, \u201cwhether they were of national importance, as was the case with the representation of candidate Vena\u0302ncio Mondlane, or small cases of petty disputes between neighbours\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican lawyer and Podemos leader Paulo Guambe were shot dead in the same ambush on Joaquim Chissano Avenue, in the centre of Maputo, in October last year, a crime that the Mozambican attorney general\u2019s office said is still being investigated, but has yet to produce any results.<\/p>\n

Agostinho Miranda recalled that the international community, specifically the International Bar Association (IBA), which represents more than a million lawyers around the world, had asked for an international investigation into the case in the middle of the election period.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut what we see, seven months later, is that there are no useful results from the investigations,\u201d he emphasised.<\/p>\n

This crime has been condemned by the secretary-general of the United Nations, the president of the European Commission, several governments, including Mozambique\u2019s, and multiple international professional and human rights organisations. Mozambique\u2019s Bar Association labelled it a \u2018barbaric murder\u2019, ProPu\u0301blica said in a statement released on Saturday (see below).<\/p>\n

Now, \u201cElvino Dias\u2019 voice has fallen silent, but his example of courage, independence and integrity will continue to inspire lawyers in Mozambique and around the world\u201d, it said.<\/p>\n

The prize, worth \u20ac10,000, will be awarded on 18 July, Nelson Mandela International Day, which celebrates the birth date of the man who put an end to the apartheid regime in South Africa.<\/p>\n

Agostinho Miranda said that Elvino EIS\u2019s family would be present and that the figures would be given to his widow.<\/p>\n

ProPu\u0301blica is the first Portuguese NGO dedicated to public interest law, promoting justice, community rights and responsibility<\/p>\n

Previous editions of the Nelson Mandela Prize have honoured lawyers Francisco Teixeira da Mota (2021), Leonor Caldeira (2022), Maria Clotilde Almeida and Paula Penha Gonc\u0327alves ex aequo (2023) and Anto\u0301nio Garcia Pereira (2024).<\/p>\n
