Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>U.S. Ambassador Dennis W. Hearne and a U.S. Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) delegation visited Quelimane, Zamb\u00e9zia Province to launch discussions with local officials, business leaders, and civil society organisations about Mozambique\u2019s second MCC Compact. Under the leadership of MCC Country Director Kenneth Miller and National Coordinator of the Gabinete de Desenvolvimento do Compacto II, Higino de Marrule, the U.S.-Mozambican technical team will conduct consultations and site visits in the province to help define Compact II\u2019s investments to maximize lasting economic benefits for Mozambique.<\/p>\n

The MCC seeks to reduce poverty through significant investments in key sectors. MCC Compacts are designed to leverage private capital, support women\u2019s economic empowerment, and combat climate change.<\/p>\n

In December 2020, the U.S. Embassy in Mozambique announced that this second MCC compact in Mozambique will focus on improving agriculture and rural transport, two national priorities identified by the Government of the Republic of Mozambique. The Government of Mozambique identified that this, Mozambique\u2019s second, would focus on Zamb\u00e9zia Province, which has the potential for greater agricultural production and to reduce poverty.<\/p>\n

\u201cMCC investments are designed to reduce poverty through economic growth,\u201d said U.S. Ambassador Dennis W. Hearne. \u201cThis process presents an invaluable opportunity to build trust around public investment and government efficacy. Ultimately, Mozambique\u2019s second MCC Compact has the potential to catalyse transformational development in Mozambique.\u201d<\/p>\n

MCC is just one of the U.S. government\u2019s development tools. In addition to other agencies like the U.S. Development Finance Corporation, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is a major source of U.S. investment in Mozambique. USAID\u2019s new five-year strategy prioritises Zambezia Province, one of four provinces that benefit from all USAID investments. From 2022 to 2027, the U.S. Government, through USAID, will invest $80 million in new agriculture projects nationwide.<\/p>\n

In addition to meeting Minister of Finance Adriano Maleiane and Minister of Agriculture Celso Correia in Maputo on November 1, the MCC delegation will meet with Zambezia Province Secretary of State Judith Mussacula and Governor Pio Augusto Matos, Mayor of Quelimane Manuel de Ara\u00fajo, as well as business associations, international partners, and stakeholders from the private sector and civil society. MCC will continue to engage with the people and government of Mozambique, as it works towards finalising Compact II in 2023.<\/p>\n

Created in 2004, MCC is an innovative U.S. Government foreign assistance agency designed to deliver programs that reduce poverty in developing countries through economic growth. MCC and the Government of Mozambique developed a five-year, $506.9 million compact in 2008 to invest in water and sanitation, roads, land tenure, and agriculture. Through investments like the construction of 614 rural water points in Nampula and Cabo Delgado provinces, the number of people with access to clean water more than doubled.<\/p>\n
