Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Friday in Maputo urged various representatives of the justice administration system to ensure administrative, civil and criminal accountability of everyone who contributes to road accidents.<\/p>\n

Addressing the magistrates on Mozambique\u2019s Legality Day, Nyusi underlined that strengthening inspections of the institutions involved in road traffic is fundamental, as most of the time accidents are caused by negligence, carelessness and corruption.<\/p>\n

\u201cSocial and economic consequences show that road accidents have become a truly public massacre, causing the loss of thousands of human lives as well as other physical and psychological damage,\u201d Nyusi said.<\/p>\n

Over the last five years (2016-2020), Mozambique recorded 19,781 victims of accidents including 5,637 fatalities; 5,915 serious injuries and 8,229 minor injuries. 45 per cent of the deaths were among people aged between 18 and 48.<\/p>\n

Nyusi said a comparison between the first six months of 2020 and the first half of this year shows that \u201cthe number of accidents grew from 452 to 462, the deaths from 392 to 417 and the seriously wounded from 298 to 321 victims.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe figures disclose how dramatic the impacts of accidents across the country are. When there is an accident we are not just facing statistics, but people whose lives have been destroyed or transformed as result of accidents,\u201d Nyusi explained, adding that the accidents also cause heavy damage to public and private infrastructures.<\/p>\n

Nyusi also pointed out that most of the accidents are caused by very well-known human abuses that can and should be avoided. They include speeding, drink-driving, disrespect for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists, and fatigue, including falling asleep at the wheel.<\/p>\n
