Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Seventeen people, including three children, died on Saturday as a result of a crash involving two vehicles, one of them a minibus taxi, in Manhi\u00e7a district, Maputo province.<\/p>\n

Fifteen people died at the scene of the accident. The 16th individual lost his life at Manhi\u00e7a District Hospital, and the 17th during evacuation to Maputo Central Hospital, to which he was referred due to the seriousness of his injuries.<\/p>\n

The accident involved a Toyota Prado, with registration AFN 483MP, which was on its way to the country\u2019s capital, and a Toyota Hiace minibus, registration AHF 604 MP, which was heading for Xai-Xai, in Gaza province.<\/p>\n

By Sunday, one patient was still under treatment at the Manhi\u00e7a District Hospital and another three had already been discharged, according to Milton Menezes, clinical director of the health unit, contacted by \u2018Not\u00edcias\u2019 yesterday.<\/p>\n

Five bodies had already been identified by relatives, according to the doctor, who said that this number could increase throughout the day, taking into account the fluidity of information and the fact that most of the victims were from Maputo.<\/p>\n

Madalena Manjate, director of the Emergency Service at Maputo Central Hospital , said that the unit had received three wounded, two of whom were still under medical care yesterday. The other had been discharged.<\/p>\n

The driver of the mini-bus, who is among the injured, is quoted by the weekly Domingo as saying that the accident occurred when the Toyota Prado crossed into his lane at high speed, making it impossible to avoid a head-on collision.<\/p>\n

It is suspected that the accident was caused by drunk driving.<\/p>\n

Several dignitaries and government officials went to the scene of the accident on Saturday and Sunday to learn about the damage caused by the accident and discuss solutions with local authorities.<\/p>\n

The governor of Maputo province, J\u00falio Parruque, on Sunday morning chaired an extraordinary session focused on finding measures to curb road accidents in Manhi\u00e7a district.<\/p>\n

It was in the same district that, on Saturday, 3 July, a public passenger transport bus that had left Beira for Maputo city at dawn collided with two trucks, killing more than 30 people.<\/p>\n
