Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The Maputo Metropolitan Transport Agency (AMT) will receive 80 gas-powered buses from China in December to boost its fleet of passenger transport vehicles, the agency announced Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The technical director of AMT, Armando Bembele, told daily newspaper Not\u00edcias that the buses were estimated to cost US$3.5 million (over three million euros) and would be used for new routes in the Greater Maputo metropolitan area.<\/p>\n

Bembele advanced that the 80 buses are part of a project to buy, over the next five years, 1,000 public transport vehicles powered by gas.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe use of this system will reduce the operational cost of transport, as natural gas is 50 percent less expensive compared to conventional fuels,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The drop in the operational cost with the road transport system in Maputo province will not imply a reduction in the price of the ticket, as the fare currently in force is out of date, he explained.<\/p>\n

Bembele noted that the focus on gas powered buses was part of the country\u2019s strategy to massify the use of less polluting energy sources and to boost opportunities for domestic use of natural gas existing in large quantities in the country.<\/p>\n
