Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi, speaking in South Korea on Monday expressed his government\u2019s commitment to removing the last stumbling block to peace and security in the northern province of Cabo Delgado, which is of paramount importance for the development of natural gas projects, according to a report in Tuesday\u2019s issue of the Maputo daily \u201cNoticias\u201d.<\/p>\n

Addressing the ceremony at the Geoje shipyard that christened the \u201cCoral Sul\u201d floating liquefied natural gas platform Nyusi told investors that the Mozambican Defence and Security forces aided by Rwandan and SADC (Southern African Development Community) troops have been recording meaningful advances in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

The FLNG platform was built at Geoje on schedule by Samsung Heavy Industries. \u201cToday\u201d, Nyusi said, \u201dwe have the chance to witness that, in spite of the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, it has been possible to implement the project within the scheduled timeframe, ensuring that LNG production will start in 2022,\u201d<\/p>\n

This achievement, he stressed, is evidence of determination and resilience.<\/p>\n

The floating platform will be stationed above the Coral South gas field, from which it takes its name, in Area Four of the Rovuma Basin, about 40 kilometres from the Cabo Delgado coast. Nyusi declared that the start of production at the Coral South FLNG project, headed by the Italian multinational ENI, will turn Mozambique into a relevant player in the global hydrocarbon market.<\/p>\n

As for the onshore gas liquefaction project, in the Afungi peninsula, in Palma district, Nyusi said the government remains in touch with the consortium, headed by the French company TotalEnergies, in order to assess the conditions and determine the right moment for the resumption of activities, but attaching special attention to the protection of human lives in the communities as well as protecting the investments.<\/p>\n

Total withdrew all its staff from Afungi in the wake of the terrorist attack against Palma town on 24 March, but has promised that they will return when security conditions allow.<\/p>\n
