Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The European Union (EU) on Monday handed over 90 houses to victims of Cyclone Idai in Dondo district, Sofala province, central Mozambique.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we are here to witness the delivery of 90 Type 1 houses, built on the basis of partner financing through the Recovery Mechanism for Mozambique,\u201d Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources Osvaldo Machatine said at the handover ceremony at the Mutua resettlement centre in Dondo district.<\/p>\n

The minister noted that the construction of the houses resulted from a financial contribution of \u20ac34.3 million from the EU to the recovery mechanism, in an initiative implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP).<\/p>\n

Machatine pointed out that the houses have inbuilt resilience, taking into account the region\u2019s propensity to natural disasters \u2013 mainly floods and cyclones.<\/p>\n

Also in the context of rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by Cyclone Idai, the community of Mutua received new facilities for its primary school, while in Beira, the rehabilitated Samora Mois\u00e9s Machel Secondary School, which had been destroyed by Idai, was handed over.<\/p>\n

The damage to the secondary school affected more than 5,900 students, prompting Minister Machatine to declare: \u201cThe result of this intervention is quite significant for the educational development for students and other users.\u201d<\/p>\n

The EU ambassador to Mozambique, Ant\u00f3nio Gaspar, said that huge challenges in terms of infrastructure destroyed by Cyclone Idai still remain.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe European Union expresses its total availability to support Mozambique in several other areas of urgent intervention, with a view to economic recovery and the encouragement of development,\u201d Gaspar promised.<\/p>\n

Cyclone Idai and the ensuing floods in March, 2019, put an estimated 1.85 million people in Sofala, Manica, Zamb\u00e9zia and Inhambane provinces in need of humanitarian aid and protection.<\/p>\n
