Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Mozambique\u2019s main opposition party, Renamo, has assured its former militiamen included in the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process, that the payment of overdue allowances will resume very soon.<\/p>\n

The allowances, paid through the United Nations, were suspended almost a year ago.<\/p>\n

The party\u2019s General Secretary, Andre Magibire, gave the guarantee during a visit to the northern province of Nampula.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would like to comfort the demobilised militiamen, particularly those included in the DDR\u201d, said Majibire. \u201cFor reasons beyond our control, payment of their allowances was interrupted a year ago\u201d.<\/p>\n

He stressed the need to leave hatred aside and follow the path of peace, which is why the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement was signed in August 2019, between President Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Ossufo Momade.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, DDR is under way and will ensure the well-being of the people, because Mozambique is for each and every one of us\u201d, he declared.<\/p>\n

Speaking at a meeting with Mozambicans in South Korea, where he is on an official visit, Nyusi confirmed that the demobilisation of Renamo militiamen in the northern three provinces will begin on Friday.<\/p>\n

These are parts of the country where no Renamo military activity has been reported for many years.<\/p>\n
