Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The process of demobilisation of former guerrillas from the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) \u2013 Mozambique\u2019s main opposition party \u2013 resumed on Tuesday with the handing over of arms by 565 members of the organisation in the northern province of Nampula, a source told Lusa.<\/p>\n

The Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) process is expected to roll out in the region over the next three to four weeks, the same source said. Registration of former fighters and other procedures to enable them to return to civilian life are to resume after a five-month pause, but still within the schedule foreseen.<\/p>\n

The former guerrillas to be covered by the process are the last to register this year, bringing the total number of Renamo members who have given up their weapons to 3,270.<\/p>\n

The DDR process is expected to end in 2022 with a total of 5,000 fighters covered, under a peace agreement signed between the Government and the main opposition party in the country in 2019.<\/p>\n

Combatants who emerge from the bush are to receive a reintegration allowance for one year and then enter Mozambique\u2019s state pension system, while also benefiting from support to help them integrate into society and various professions.<\/p>\n

Some former members, as foreseen in the agreements, have been incorporated into Mozambique\u2019s Defence and Security Forces.<\/p>\n
