{"id":95272,"date":"2025-12-08T11:12:51","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T11:12:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/working-class-central-for-economic-independence"},"modified":"2025-12-08T11:37:27","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T11:37:27","slug":"working-class-central-for-economic-independence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/all-news\/working-class-central-for-economic-independence","title":{"rendered":"Working Class Central for Economic Independence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Mozambique. <\/strong> <\/span>Mozambican President Daniel Chapo declared on Saturday that the working class is \u201cthe central pillar for the construction of the economic independence of Mozambique\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Opening the 8th Congress of the country\u2019s main trade union federation, the OTM (Mozambican Workers\u2019 Organisation), in the southern municipality of Matola, Chapo said \u201cit is the workers who build Mozambique\u201d, and that the labour stability achieved in the country is now one of its main competitive advantages.<\/p>\n<p>Matola is the main industrial city in Mozambique, and Chapo described it as \u201cthe working-class heart of Mozambique\u201d. He said that, despite the crises that Mozambique has faced, including natural disasters and the Covid-19 pandemic, \u201cMozambican workers are continuing to advance and sustain the nation\u2019s progress\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chapo noted that the year of the OTM\u2019s 8th Congress coincides with the 50th anniversary of Mozambican independence in 1975. He called for \u201cconsolidating the foundations of economic independence\u201d. This was a moment when \u201cthe present enters into dialogue with the future and when the country should transform the freedom it has won into \u201cwell deserved prosperity and dignity for all\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Chapo believed that now is \u201ca crucial moment for renewing energies, affirming a modern leadership and strengthening the mission of the working class\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Over the decades, he added, the OTM had protected workers\u2019 rights and kept alive \u201cthe flame of working-class justice\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The theme of the Congress is \u201cConsolidation of Trade Union Democracy, Labour Justice and Social Welfare\u201d. Chapo said this demands a national commitment to strong trade unions, dignified labour and social transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Trade union leadership in the 21st century, he added, should rest on political, economic and social intelligence in negotiations, on a strategic vision oriented towards the common good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStability only exists where there is social dialogue\u201d, he
