Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The President of the Republic of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi has ordered the immediate resumption of the Chambo ferry service linking Mozambique and Malawi across Lake Niassa.<\/p>\n

Paralysed for about two years due to Covid 19 restrictions, the Chambo service plies the route between Malawi and the east coast of Mozambique, in Niassa province.<\/p>\n

With capacity to transport 100 passengers and ten tons of cargo, the vessel facilitates the movement of Likoma, Chizumulu and Nkhata Bay residents on the Malawian side and C\u00f3bue on the Mozambican side.<\/p>\n

President Nyusi\u2019s decision comes at the behest of the Mozambican community residing in Malawi.<\/p>\n

Before President Nyusi\u2019s decision, Minister of Transport and Communications Janfar Abdulai had said that the boat\u2019s circulation would only be possible at the end of next month because of the need for some dredging at access points.<\/p>\n

Abdulai explained at the time that a tender for the dredging works had already been launched, but his explanation did not sit well with the president, who ordered the immediate resumption of service.<\/p>\n

In September of last year, the Malawian authorities had sent a letter to the Mozambican government asking that service be resumed, but this did not receive a positive response.<\/p>\n
