Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The United Nations has declared 7 July each year as the world\u2019s official day to celebrate the Swahili language.<\/p>\n

The announcement was made on Tuesday at the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) headquarters in France.<\/p>\n

It is the first African language to be recognised by the UN and have its own day of celebration, according to Unesco.<\/p>\n

Swahili is also the only African language to have been officially recognised by the African Union.<\/p>\n

Swahili, is widely spoken across East Africa, and in parts of central and southern African countries.<\/p>\n

Citizens of at least 11 countries speak Swahili. These are Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Somalia, Malawi, Zambia, DR Congo, and Comoros Islands.<\/p>\n
