Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>IOM Mozambique, in partnership with the European Union (EU), delivers 6 vehicles to the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM). The vehicles will benefit the work of PRM in Cabo Delgado, especially in the districts of Ancuabe, Chiure, Metuge, Montepuez, Namuno, and Pemba. Specifically, the vehicles will support the work of the Community Policing Department by increasing capacities to deliver support in the areas of community engagement and community policing. This will improve the relations of trust between the law enforcement and the communities through regular visits to promote dialogue and jointly address security concerns that affect the communities, with the ultimate objective of enhancing security and stability in areas affected by violence in the Northern Region of Mozambique.<\/p>\n

Since 2019 IOM through its peacebuilding intervention in northern Mozambique is working to address underlying root causes of fragility, violence, and displacement. Within this, and since March 2021, IOM has been supporting PRM to enhance policing operational capacity through the provision of equipment as well as technical and infrastructural support aimed to contribute to building resilience in communities and increase law enforcement\u2019s positive relationships with communities in Cabo Delgado.<\/p>\n

\u201cMozambique has been historically characterized by dynamic human mobility patterns that contribute to the socio-economic development of border communities and the Mozambican society as a whole. To ensure that these migration flows are safe, orderly and regular, as well as to ensure that positive relations between communities and law enforcement contribute to a peaceful and resilient society, strengthening the PRM\u2019s operational capacity is essential said Laura Tomm-Bonde, IOM Mozambique Chief of Mission.<\/p>\n

In the last decades, Mozambique has been confronted with fast-evolving cross-border migration dynamics and changing mixed migration flows, in which security-related factors have had a significant impact, including the proliferation of Transnational Organised Crime (TOC) and Non-State Armed Groups (NSAG).<\/p>\n

These evolving dynamics have shown multifaceted and complex links with the insecurity that has characterised Cabo Delgado, which has caused the displacement of close to 750 thousand people (IOM DTM Baseline Assessment Report Round 13 \u2013 September 2021 | Displacement) across central and northern Mozambique since 2017, triggering a pressing need to strengthen community security and stability in these communities affected by violence.<\/p>\n

To promote peace and stability and therefore addressing the root causes of violence and displacement, IOM supports the Government of Mozambique through the implementation of the EU funded Project \u201cStrengthening community security and stability in communities affected by violence in the Northern Region of Mozambique through police capacity building and community engagement\u201d. This close collaboration, which contributes to better managing migration at local, national, regional and global levels, is aimed to promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development and build effective, accountable institutions at all levels.<\/p>\n

In 2021, IOM requires USD 58 million to support emergency and post crisis efforts throughout Mozambique under the IOM Mozambique Crisis Response Plan which includes USD 21.7 million to respond to immediate life-saving humanitarian needs in northern Mozambique through this year\u2019s Humanitarian Response Plan, which remains underfunded.<\/p>\n
