Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>Two cases of the Omicron variant have been detected in the United Kingdom, the country\u2019s Secretary of State for Health Sajid Javid said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

Javid tweeted that the two cases were linked and that there was a connection with travel to southern Africa.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese individuals are self-isolating with their households while further testing and contact tracing is underway,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The Health Secretary said targeted testing would be rolled out in the affected areas (of Nottingham and Chelmsford) as well as sequencing of all positive cases.<\/p>\n

Javid said Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola would be added to the UK\u2019s travel red list, effective from 4 a.m. Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you have returned from there in the last 10 days you must isolate and get PCR tests,\u201d his tweet said.<\/p>\n

A country being on the \u201cred list\u201d means that UK residents, as well as British and Irish nationals arriving home from that red list point of departure, must undergo a 10-day hotel quarantine at their own expense.<\/p>\n

We have been made aware by @UKHSA of two UK cases of the Omicron variant. The two cases are linked and there is a connection with travel to southern Africa.<\/p>\n

Four countries added to travel red list as Sajid Javid reveals Omicron cases in UK<\/b><\/p>\n

|Four countries have been added to Britain\u2019s travel red list, after the first cases of the Omicron coronavirus variant were detected in the UK.<\/p>\n

Health Secretary Sajid Javid announced that from 4am on Sunday 28 November, non-UK and Irish residents who have been in Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola in the previous 10 days will be refused entry into England.<\/p>\n

They join the six countries added to the list on Thursday night \u2013 South Africa, Botswana, Lesostho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Namibia.<\/p>\n

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) confirmed today that two cases of COVID-19 with mutations consistent with variant B.1.1.529 \u2013 known as the Omicron variant \u2013 have been identified in the UK.<\/p>\n

The Government said patients that have tested positive and all members of their households are being re-tested and told to self-isolate while further testing and contact tracing is underway.<\/p>\n

One case has been located in Chelmsford and the other in Nottingham. The two cases are linked and there is a link to travel to Southern Africa.<\/p>\n

UKHSA is carrying out targeted testing at locations where the positive cases were likely to have been infectious.<\/p>\n

Mr Javid said: \u201cThanks to our world class genomic sequencing we have been made aware of two UK cases of the Omicron variant. We have moved rapidly and the individuals are self-isolating while contact tracing is ongoing.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will do all we can to protect the UK public against this emerging threat and that is why we are surging testing capacity to the impacted communities and introducing travel restrictions on a further four countries: Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Angola. We will not hesitate to take further action if required.<\/p>\n
