{"id":976,"date":"2021-06-17T16:22:43","date_gmt":"2021-06-17T16:22:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/?p=976"},"modified":"2021-06-17T16:22:43","modified_gmt":"2021-06-17T16:22:43","slug":"government-aims-to-improve-forestry-management","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/mozambique\/policy\/government-aims-to-improve-forestry-management","title":{"rendered":"Government aims to improve forestry management"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>AfricaPress-mozambique:<\/strong> Mozambique is launching a programme to improve forestry management in the face of illegal logging and other malpractices which are costing the country incalculable amounts.<\/p>\n<p>The World Bank has made over five million US dollars available for this programme, so that Mozambique can develop its own inspection capacity. The programme is to be implemented by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).<\/p>\n<p>The National Forestry Inventory of 2018 indicated that 267,000 hectares of forest were lost every year in the period between 2003 and 2013. This meant that, on average, the country was losing 0.76 per cent of its forest cover every year.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, there are still 34 million hectares of native forest in Mozambique, covering 43 per cent of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Faced with the hard reality of deforestation and forest degradation, representing a high cost for local communities and for the national economy, regional training for forest wardens has been under way since Monday in the northern city of Nampula.<\/p>\n<p>The training is for the three northern provinces (Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Nampula) with the purpose of providing forest wardens and associated staff with the skills to identify tree species.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_194684\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/clubofmozambique.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/forestry.nampula.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-194684\" src=\"https:\/\/clubofmozambique.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/forestry.nampula.jpg\" alt=\"Forestry.nampula\" width=\"664\" height=\"515\" \/><\/a><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo: Sondhozo Ndine on\u00a0<\/em><i>Facebook<\/i><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alima Taquidir, from the Ministry of Land and Environment, said that through improving forestry management, the country could benefit from the enormous potential it possesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to improve the monitoring of tree species throughout the country\u201d, said Taquidir. \u201cWe need to do this because one tree trunk that has been logged can easily be confused with another.
