Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong> <\/span>The Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique (CTA) said last Thursday that the country\u2019s repayment of its debt to the IMF is a \u201csignificant indicator\u201d of macroeconomic responsibility and the strengthening of international credibility, while also calling for attention to \u201csubstantial domestic debts.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe private sector recognises and values the fulfilment of financial obligations to the International Monetary Fund, as it represents a significant signal of macroeconomic responsibility and enhances the country\u2019s international credibility,\u201d reads a statement from the CTA, sent to the media.<\/p>\n

The Mozambican Ministry of Finance confirmed on Thursday that it made a \u201cfull and early repayment\u201d of \u20ac630 million to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), settling loans contracted under the Poverty Reduction and Growth Trust (PRGT) programme.<\/p>\n

According to the Ministry, this repayment represents the \u201cearly settlement of all of Mozambique\u2019s obligations\u201d under the PRGT programme of the IMF, amounting to US$698.588 million (\u20ac630 million).<\/p>\n

Mozambican business leaders consider that the full repayment of Mozambique\u2019s IMF debt contributes to consolidating external partners\u2019 confidence and creating conditions for deeper economic and financial cooperation. They also emphasised that macroeconomic stability must be accompanied by \u201cconsistent domestic measures that promote inclusive and sustainable growth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe challenge is to ensure that this effort is complemented by policies that stimulate domestic production, private investment, and the competitiveness of the economy. In this context, it is also important that the Government gives attention to the substantial domestic debts, signalling their progressive repayment as a way to stimulate the domestic economy,\u201d stated the business representatives.<\/p>\n

Lusa reported last week that Mozambique fully settled its debt to the IMF in March, which had amounted to 514,040,000 SDRs (special drawing rights), equivalent to \u20ac630 million, while negotiating a new assistance programme, according to the IMF\u2019s update.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Finance noted that the loans repaid by the State correspond to disbursements under the PRGT for the 2019 Rapid Credit Facility, the 2020 Rapid Credit Facility, and the 2022 Extended Credit Facility.<\/p>\n

In its latest assessment of the country, published in February, the IMF did not anticipate decisions regarding new support for Mozambique, which the Government has been negotiating for a year. The report noted that outstanding credit with the institution had reached 226% of quota.<\/p>\n

According to the assessment, under the last ECF programme (Extended Credit Facility), the IMF had approved financing of around US$468 million (\u20ac398.5 million) for Mozambique in 2022.<\/p>\n

However, this programme was suspended in April 2025, after approximately US$343 million (\u20ac292 million) had been disbursed in four tranches.<\/p>\n

It added that Mozambique would need to repay the IMF US$98 million in 2026, approximately US$107.5 million in 2027, US$129.3 million in 2028, and US$136.4 million in 2029.<\/p>\n

Mozambique clears 514 million SDRs, IMF credit outstanding now zero<\/b><\/p>\n

President, Daniel Chapo, said last June that he expected to sign a new IMF support programme in 2025, a plan that has been reinforced in the following months and again at the beginning of 2026.<\/p>\n

Mozambique has faced significant economic challenges over the years, including high levels of debt and reliance on international financial assistance. The country entered into various loan agreements with the IMF to support its economic recovery and growth initiatives. The recent repayment of its debt to the IMF marks a pivotal moment in its efforts to regain financial stability and credibility on the global stage. Business leaders in Mozambique stress the importance of maintaining macroeconomic stability while also addressing domestic economic issues to ensure sustainable growth.<\/p>\n
