Africa-Press – Mozambique. <\/strong><\/span>The personal envoy of the UN Secretary General and chairman of the contact group for peace negotiations in Mozambique has announced the demobilisation of the last members of the Renamo splinter group responsible for armed attacks in the centre of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe last group of 24 members of the Military Junta has completed demobilisation in Murrupula, Nampula province and has now joined the rest of the participants in the ongoing disarmament, demobilisation and reintegration (DDR) activities at the national level,\u201d Mirko Manzoni said in a statement distributed to the media.<\/p>\n

The self-proclaimed Renamo Military Junta, a splinter group of the main opposition political force responsible for armed attacks in central Mozambique, lost its leader, Mariano Nhongo, on 11 October, after 28 months of contesting the RENAMO leadership and demanding the renegotiation of the peace agreement signed in August 2019.<\/p>\n

Mariano Nhongo was gunned down in the bush in Cheringoma district, Sofala province, in the centre of the country, during an exchange of fire with a police patrol, after months of offensives by government forces aimed at halting the armed attacks by his group, responsible for the deaths of more than 30 people on roads and in villages in Manica and Sofala provinces since August 2019, according to authorities.<\/p>\n

According to the UN Secretary-General\u2019s personal envoy, a total of 85 members of the group have handed in their weapons and joined the DDR process under the peace agreement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe process will continue in Murrupula until its conclusion in mid-December, with around 63 per cent of all DDR beneficiaries expected to welcome the new year at home with their families and in their communities,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n

The group of Mariano Nhongo, former Renamo guerrilla leader, disagreed with the terms of the DDR process arising from the peace agreement signed on 06 August 2019 between Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and current Renamo leader Ossufo Momade.<\/p>\n

The understanding was the third between the Frelimo government and Renamo, with all three having been signed following cycles of armed violence between the two sides.<\/p>\n

Under the Peace and National Reconciliation Agreement, more than half of the approximately five thousand Renamo guerrillas were already covered by the DDR, and some have joined the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces.<\/p>\n
