THE Government’s water infrastructure initiatives have enabled 2,886 rural households to receive direct water connections over the past year.
President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah highlighted this achievement during her recent State of the Nation Address, noting that rural water supply coverage increased from 83.5% to 84.9% over the same period.
She attributed the improvement to substantial investment in water infrastructure, including the completion of 94 new boreholes, the installation of 137 water-supply facilities, the rehabilitation of 51 boreholes, and the construction of 55 distribution pipelines.
The President also noted that the Government has additional plans to further strengthen water security, including pipeline upgrades, with several initiatives already underway.
“In November 2025, I inaugurated the N$250 million Ohangwena II Wellfield, supported by the African Development Bank. The Government also signed a 75-million-euro agreement with KfW to help fund the Omundaungilo–Omutsegwonime Pipeline, which will provide much-needed relief to communities in the eastern Ohangwena and Oshikoto regions,” the President continued.
President Nandi-Ndaitwah further pointed out that the second-largest water supply project currently in progress is the Rundu Water Treatment Plant Extension, valued at N$650 million. This project aims to provide water to Rundu and surrounding communities within a 100-mile radius across both the Kavango East and Kavango West regions.
“In the Zambezi Region, funding from KfW and the African Development Bank has been secured for the construction of a new water treatment plant, storage reservoirs in Katima Mulilo, and new rural water pipelines,” the President added.
She also announced that the Naute–Keetmanshoop Pipeline Replacement Project has begun, modernising the ageing pipeline at a cost of N$200 million.
