The Fisheries Minister, Inge Zaamwani, has officially appointed the members of the Marine Advisory Council, which will be responsible for advising on sustainable management and development of the fishing industry.
“Most of you are familiar with the industry. It is at a critical stage in its lifespan. You have seen how the Total Allowable Catch has been declining over the years due to a number of factors – natural factors, and possibly overfishing and overcatching, as well as a ceiling population that may be contributing to the decline. Some of your responsibility will be to advise us on how we can manage this resource sustainably for the benefit of both the current and future generations. We want your guidance on how best to enhance the fishing industry’s contribution to our economic development,” Zaamwani said.

She emphasised that the council will advise the Minister and Deputy Minister on key issues affecting the fishing industry, particularly in finding the right balance between harvesting and sustainability.
“We are a country well known for our fishing sector, which is well managed and serves as a benchmark for many other countries. We are at a critical stage where we need to balance harvesting and sustainability, and we need to see how we can consolidate the key players in the industry,” the Minister added.
Zaamwani explained that the council members were appointed for their extensive expertise and experience in the fishing sector. The newly appointed members include Teofilus Nghitila (Chairperson), Hilma Shiwedha, Dr Martha Uumati, Dr Omu Kakujaha-Matundu, Dr Hashali Hamukwaya, Aino-Sylvia Nsinano, Johanna Shiweda, Elly Hamunyela, Alexander Kirov, Beau Tjizoo, Jacob Penda, and Joyce Mbuende (Secretary).
