Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Marlins Aquatic Club recently held an outreach programme at Ondangwa to teach the public about water safety and how to swim.
The initiative was sponsored by Windhoek-based Learn to Swim coach Herta Becker, who has more than 35 years of experience in the trade through her Neumeister Swim School. She was assisted by Samora Naukushu, who wants to qualify as a lifesaver and become a swimming instructor.
The course was held at the sporting facility of Ondangwa Town Council, known as the Tennis Club, which was made available by Johan Roelofse. Roelofse, also helped with the organisation and logistics of the course.
The intensive course, held from 20 to 23 December, was provided free of charge, and swimming gear and equipment such as caps, goggles, pool noodles and kicking boards were also supplied to all participants.
The event attracted significant interest, and Herta ended up teaching 105 swimmers aged six to 40 years. There were also 22 children from the local SOS Children’s Village.
Everyone who participated in all the sessions was awarded a certificate at an event attended by Gerhard Sam, the manager for local economic development and marketing at Ondangwa Town Council. The next development course in Ondangwa is planned for the Independence weekend.
