NAMIBIA remains among a limited group of countries globally recognised as free of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD) without vaccination, a status that provides access to high-value export markets but requires strict controls and ongoing vigilance to maintain.

According to a global map published by the World Organisation for Animal Health, only a small number of countries and zones fall into the FMD-free without vaccination category, placing Namibia’s livestock sector within a highly regulated and competitive segment of the global market.

This status allows Namibia’s beef and livestock products to access premium international markets where stringent animal health standards are essential, offering better pricing and long-term stability for producers.

In contrast, many countries either rely on vaccination, lack official FMD status, or continue to face outbreaks, limiting their access to such lucrative markets.

However, maintaining Namibia’s position requires sustained effort across the entire value chain, including strict disease control measures, compliance with regulations, and coordination between authorities and farmers.

The distinction between disease-risk areas and designated export zones within the country remains critical in safeguarding this status.

Authorities emphasise that preserving Namibia’s FMD-free classification is essential, as it underpins the long-term sustainability, competitiveness, and profitability of the livestock sector.
