Africa-Press – Namibia. Deputy minister of international relations and cooperation, Jenelly Matundu, said the ministry is looking forward to support from the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (Uneca) to aid economic recovery.

She said this today at the annual retreat of the senior leadership of Uneca at its opening held in Windhoek. According to Matundu the agricultural, manufacturing, tourism, investment and financing sectors are some of the critical areas that need support from Uneca.

The retreat is aimed at strengthening the leadership’s capacity to collectively drive an institutional culture that fosters cohesion and excellence in the delivery of its mandate on Africa’s development priorities.

“Uneca has its own mandate which is to promote economic and sustainable development for African states,” Matundu said. The theme for this year is ‘Enhancing cohesion, inclusivity and performance.’

Matundu added that a partnership with Uneca in strengthening the methods of data collection and statistical analysis, especially during the upcoming national census, will be highly appreciated.

“Equally, the role of transport and logistics has become increasingly important for Namibia’s economy,” she said.

Matundu said that the rapid growth in freight volumes along Walvis Bay’s corridors and the advantages of trade routes, have made Walvis Bay a lucrative gateway to the outward market across the Atlantic Ocean.

She added that the tourism sector is vital to the Namibian economy, as the industry provides the government with revenue and employment for Namibian citizens.

“However, the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic has devastated the sector over the past two years. We count on the support and advice of Uneca to revive the tourism sector so that it prospers and continues to play a significant role in the economy,” she said.
