Africa-Press – Namibia. A SUSPECTED fuel-smuggling couple was arrested in the Oshana Region after first being chased by members of the Special Reserve Force, Emergency Response Units and Nampol’s Airwing Unit and then fleeing on foot when their car got stuck in the mud.

According to Community Affairs Officer Inspector Thomas Aiyambo, the suspects, aged 42 and 26 respectively, were driving from the direction of Endola toward Okatana when the police received a tip-off that they were selling smuggled fuel along the road.

“We pursued them but the driver kept on accelerating and diverted into the villages. They got stuck in the mud of the oshana stream and abandoned the motor vehicle, fleeing the scene,” he said.

The operation was joined by members of the Special Reserve Force, Emergency Response Units and Nampol’s Airwing Unit. They tracked the suspects’ footprints that lead to the man’s arrest at Omahai village and the woman’s arrest at Omusheshe village around 14:00 on Thursday.

Aiyambo stated that the force confiscated a total of 12 containers with a combined 300 litres of fuel valued at N$8 462 and N$3 500 in cash. The suspects were charged with contravention of the Petroleum Products and Energy Act. Aiyambo applauded members of the community for their collective efforts to root out criminal activities.
