Africa-Press – Namibia. Deputy prime minister and minister of international relations and cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah says 49 Namibians have arrived back home from Ukraine with the government’s assistance.
Two of the Namibians returned home after making their own arrangements to get away from Russian president Vladimir Putin’s military attack on Ukraine.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Nandi-Ndaitwah said contrary to a figure of 114 reported earlier, 89 Namibians were in Ukraine when the country was attacked by Russian military forces.
“It is understood that the other nationals making up the total of 114 left Ukraine before the outbreak of the crisis,” she stated.
“To date, from the 89 nationals, 81 are out of Ukraine and are safe. There is one national who indicated that she is safe and does not wish to reveal her whereabouts,” she said.
Nandi-Ndaitwah said the government, together with honorary consuls, the Navachab mining company and friends of Namibia in neighbouring countries of Ukraine, continue to do everything in its power to ensure the safe evacuation and passage of Namibians from Ukraine.
“We are in contact with six nationals who are still in Ukraine, including the four who were successfully rescued in Sumi, which is the hotspot,” she stated.
“Of the six, five are on their way to the Polish border, the other one, we are still working to secure a safe route out of Ukraine. We thank all those who worked with us in evacuating our nation.”
Nandi-Ndaitwah said some Namibians in Ukraine have opted not to take up the government’s offer to be repatriated, and they are expected to make their own arrangements.
“The government will continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to those remaining in Ukraine to be repatriated back home safely,” she said.
