Africa-Press – Namibia. ERONGO police criminal investigations coordinator deputy commissioner Erastus Iikuyu says two people were injured while fighting a blaze that laid Spar Henties Bay in ruins on Saturday night.
A firefighter was lightly injured and a civilian fell from a roof structure in an attempt to help fight the fire. The man was rushed to the Cottage MediClinic at Swakopmund and is in a stable condition.
Iikuyu says the fire is believed to have started in a take-away kitchen in the supermarket on Saturday. The damage is estimated at N$25 million, and it could take up to 16 months to reopen the shop for business, he says.
The Swakopmund fire brigade also raced to the scene on Saturday evening to assist Henties Bay’s emergency services. Although the fire was under control at around 23:00, firefighters could only manage to put out the blaze by 03h30 on Sunday, Iikuyu says. The fire brigade on Sunday morning remained at the scene, putting out flare-ups.
