Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ondangwa Town Council on Friday commissioned a 321 erven housing project at Ondangwa, Extension 24, for low to middle income earners.

The council spent about N$33 million towards infrastructural developments such as water, sewerage, electricity reticulation and roads at the new extension.

Out of the 179 plots that were allocated to 15 private developers, 130 of those houses are already occupied while the rest are in the final stages.

“This huge housing development could not have happened if it was not for the good work and partnership that the council of Ondangwa has developed with various banking and financial institutions, and most importantly our partnership with so many housing developers and local business people,” said Ondangwa mayor Paavo Amwele at the commissioning of the project on Friday.

Urban and rural development minister Erastus Uutoni noted that the ministry will continue to lobby for more funds for local authorities that are working closely with the electorate and therefore are familiar with their needs and aspirations.

“The successful and timely completion of this housing project is a source of hope and pride for the home owners of Ondangwa, particularly of Extension 24. Thus, while appealing to the lucky owners to care for their houses and ensure they pay their municipal services on time, I also applaud the contractors for making sure that this project comes to pass as per the expected time frame. Our goal therefore, should remain to focus and work as a team towards bringing the needed development to our communities,” he said.

Uutoni added that the ministry aims to ensure progress in providing basic services across the country. He also encouraged the leadership of Ondangwa Town Council to intensify these kinds of projects, as well as smart partnerships with the private sector to provide adequate and affordable housing to residents.

The event also coincided with the unvailing of street names for athletes Ananias Shikongo and Johannes Nambala.
