Africa-Press – Namibia. SALOME Kambala, a member of the National Governance Council under the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM), says the council will use the mechanism to tackle youth unemployment.

Kambala last week said the APRM aims to foster good governance, high economic growth, and to enable the sharing of experiences and best practices by identifying and assessing the needs of capacity building.

“Namibia became part of the APRM in 2017. It’s a self-monitoring and peer learning instrument,” she said. Kambala said through the APRM the council can monitor and learn from other countries how to resolve various challenges they are faced with.

“In Namibia we have the issue of youth unemployment. Through the APRM we can approach other countries, such as Mozambique, and ask how they go about it, and ask if they can share their best practices with us,” she said.

According to Kambala, the council has conducted a countrywide target review and has engaged stakeholders on youth unemployment. “We need to know where the issue lies from the youth themselves – our target audience,” she said.

Kambala said the council has a self-assessment report countries can use to review themselves. “After the self-assessment report has been concluded, it is shared with the United Nations and other African countries.

“With the self-assessment you report the way things are. If Namibia has a high rate of unemployment, you say it as it is,” she said. Another member of the National Governance Council, Niita Hishono, said the council is considering all issues in Namibia and how to approach them.

“We have received different recommendations on areas we are tackling, such as on democratic and political governance, economic governance and management, socio-economic governance, and corporate governance,” she said.

Hishono said the council would engage civil society, the private sector and the media, as well as young people on all issues. She said they are engaging other African countries on the reviews.

“Namibians should take up opportunities and engage on issues that can change and uplift the country for good governance, and learn more on our website,” Hishono said.
