Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources cannot yet say exactly why thousands of fish, mostly pilchards, ended up on Walvis Bay beaches Thursday where people flocked to, joyously filling buckets and bags with seafood. The Ministry did, however, state the fish were not washed up due to natural occurrences or climate impacts, as many people speculated.
Ministry spokesperson Uaripi Katjiukua said preliminary investigations revealed the pilchards spotted on the shores of Independence Beach were most probably caught accidentally by a Mullet Right Holder, leading to an extremely large number of the pilchards swimming in the shallows in the area.
The Ministry is getting more information from these operators and will issue a statement on the findings. Videos of people collecting fish at the beach have been widely circulated on various social media platforms.
“What we came across yesterday around 11:30 am just some few miles between the Port of Walvis Bay and Anchorage area No 3. The whole area was covered with fish of different species, mainly pilchards,” said the person who sent this video to Informanté via WhatsApp.
