Africa-Press – Namibia. FLORIS STEENKAMP TRANSNAMIB has confirmed a railway accident near Tsumeb on Thursday night. A locomotive slammed into several stationary wagons, causing the locomotive and three wagons to partially capsize.
This damaged the rail line and blocked any further train movement. TransNamib spokesperson Abigail Raubenheimer confirmed the incident in a media statement and said no injuries were reported. An investigation has been launched, she said.
TransNamib chief executive Johny Smith recently told The Namibian the national rail carrier has 20 operational locomotives but needs double that number to effectively carry out its services countrywide. This accident is expected to put further pressure on TransNamib’s operational capacity.
