Africa-Press – Namibia. PRESIDENT Hage Geingob says the government will always be on the side of the workers and stand with the working class.
He said this in his Workers’ Day message on Sunday.
The president said the Workers’ Day commemorates workers’ achievements and their contributions to society towards socio-economic development.
According to him, the fact that the day signifies awareness about some of the difficulties workers faced in the collective endeavour to improve their working conditions, the Namibian government stands with workers in that ongoing journey.
He said the fight for independence was accelerated by the struggle of workers against the exploitative and unjust colonial regime.
“The rights of workers in Namibia are a fundamental right guaranteed and protected by the Constitution,” he said.
The president added that since independence, the Namibian government has been committed to the advancement of Namibian workers by putting in place several interventions to guarantee fairness, protect their safety and improve their working conditions.
“Although we have made significant progress as a country to guarantee safe working environments for workers, there is still much more to be done,” Geingob said.
The president recognised the efforts of frontline workers, men and women in uniforms who, during the Covid-19 pandemic, risked their lives to save lives – the lives of Namibians and those who live in Namibia.
