Oshakati Town Council employees vote for strike

Africa-Press – Namibia. Oshakati Town Council employees on Friday voted to go on strike following an unresolved dispute about a request for a seven-percent pay increase.

The strike is due to start next week, sources at the council told The Namibian on Saturday.

Oshakati mayor Leonard Hango said during a council meeting in February this year that the issue of staff salaries had been referred to the Office of the Labour Commissioner.

According to council documents early last year, the town council through the Namibia Public Workers Union asked urban and rural development minister Erastus Utoni to approve a salary increase of seven percent for its employees.

While the council employees wanted a salary increment, the council also proposed to the minister that it wanted to increase the costs of municipal services such as water and refuse removal.
