Africa-Press – Namibia. Maria David FORMER president Hifikepunye Pohamba has called on all friends of education to assist the Hifikepunye Pohamba Combined School (CS), previously known as Oshidute CS. Established in 1956, the school with its 401 learners faces many challenges as enrolment continuously increases.
Pohamba made the call on Friday during the inaugural renaming of the school and the announcement of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah as patron of the school. Pohamba said education requires a collective effort from all people.
“I call upon our business community, especially local business entities, to join the friends of education and sponsor different kinds of teaching and learning materials, as well as helping the school to construct the required science laboratory,” he added.
Pohamba urged all stakeholders in the education fraternity to join hands with the government to tackle the challenges facing the education sector. Principal Petrus Shikongo said the school has many pressing needs such as a new roof for the school library after it was damaged during a big storm in 2016.
Shikongo said they also need copying machines, a science laboratory and equipment, a computer laboratory and printers. They need desks and chairs, a school garden to enhance food security, proper sports facilities and equipment, as well as two additional classrooms.
“We also need the junior primary class block renovated and the school fence extended,” he added.
Shikongo called on the community to meet the government halfway in assisting the school’s development. The school has so far received a pledge of over N$48 000 in cash and kind.
