Africa-Press – Namibia. A spokesperson of South Africa’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Leigh-Ann Mathys, says there are no plans by her organisation to shut down the high commission of Namibia in South Africa.
Mathys said this after it was claimed in a social media post on Friday that EFF leader Julius Malema had stated the EFF would shut down the Namibian high commission in Pretoria if Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters leader Epafras Mukwiilongo and party member Michael Amushelelo were not freed from police custody within 24 hours.
Mukwiilongo also shared the post on social media on Saturday. He did not respond when asked about the authenticity of the post.
“Fake news. There have been no engagements on that,” Mathys said before she referred The Namibian to the EFF’s head of international relations, Godrich Gardee.
Gardee said he could not comment on the matter as he is mourning the death of his daughter.
Mukwiilongo and four other activists were arrested by the police at a demonstration at the China Town shopping complex in Windhoek on Friday.
Amushelelo was also arrested on Friday, in connection with events during which he ordered shops at China Town to close – allegedly because they are selling counterfeit branded goods – on Thursday last week.
Mukwiilongo and the other people arrested – except for Affirmative Repositioning movement member Dimbulukeni Nauyoma – have been released from custody since their arrest on Friday.
Amushelelo and Nauyoma are expected to make a first court appearance following their arrest on Monday.
