Africa-Press – Namibia. NAMIBIA will host Africa’s second-largest millimetre telescope.
The project will be spearheaded by the University of Namibia (Unam) and the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) project from Radboud University.
The two partners, who are currently consulting, says the telescope will be launched in due course.
Radbound University managing director Marc Klein Wolt says the telescope will be part of the biggest in the world.
He says the project will greatly contribute to the economic and scientific development of the country.
“What we are going to put here on the Gamsberg Mountain is a world-class facility. This will give Namibia the chance to also use the telescope, and it will give the country the chance to grow the skills needed for it,” he says.
Senior lecturer at Unam, Micheal Backer, says Namibia is well placed to host the telescope.
“Namibia is certainly the best place on earth to do astronomy for several reasons. The benefits certainly are multiplied.
“It started with a world-class research project of exchange between staff and between students,” he says.
