Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Kalumbi Shangula, has sounded the alarm on the rising number of Covid-19 cases in the country, stating that the country has entered its fifth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic as it braces for a rapid rise in cases.
A total of 344 new Covid-19 cases were recorded on 19 May 2022.
“We are in the fifth Covid-19 wave. The cases are driven by Omicron sub lineage BA.2 and BA.4. The message to the public remains: vaccination, wear masks, keep physical distance, wash hands or sanitize. Most important, remain calm,” Kalumbi shared.
In its latest Covid-19 update, the health ministry noted that from the positive cases recorded, 310 are new cases and 34 are reinfections.
No deaths were recorded during the period under review.
The number of active cases now stands at 2 461 of which 86 cases are hospitalized in nine regions with six in ICUs.
Ten of the hospitalized cases are fully vaccinated, and none of the ICU admissions are vaccinated.
By 18 May 2022, a total of 463 295 people aged 18 years and older have received one dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, representing 31.0% of the target population (1 471 973).
