Africa-Press – Namibia. PRESIDENT Hage Geingob reflected on the long journey travelled by Africans during the fight against oppression, colonialism and apartheid, during his Africa Day message today.
“In commemoration of this day, we celebrate Africa’s rich and glorious history of triumph, and we recognise the progress Africa has made over the course of almost six decades of freedom,” said Geingob.
Africa Day is commemorated annually on 25 May.
Geingob said that Africa today is a better place for its citizens than it has been at any point in the continent’s history.
Geingob said there is no room for complacency, as a lot of hard work lies ahead to build a prosperous and inclusive Africa for all.
“The long march towards economic emancipation is incomplete and requires even more dedication than our fight against oppression,” he said.
This year, Africa Day is celebrated under the theme: ‘Strengthening Resilience in Nutrition and Food Security on the African Continent’.
According to Geingob, this is an opportune moment for continued action to build on the gains made over the years in terms of fighting poverty and strengthening nutrition for healthier communities.
“In that vein, Namibia will work alongside fellow African countries towards strengthening resilience in nutrition for food security on the African continent,” he said.
Africa Day honours the African Union’s (AU) forerunner, the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which was founded on 25 May 1963.
The OAU was transformed into the AU on 9 July 2002, with this year marking its 20th anniversary.
This year, the day is commemorated alongside the extraordinary summit of the AU, that is currently underway in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea.
