Africa-Press – Namibia. FRENCH public interest group Tara Ocean Foundation arrived at Walvis Bay on Wednesday for a stopover mission on ocean preservation.

From 1 to 6 June, the foundation will host discussions and workshops on the oceanic microbiome and plastic pollution in the ocean, as well as a public conference and documentary screening of ‘Oceans: The Mystery of the Missing Plastic’.

The French marine and scientific crew will further organise guided tours of its floating laboratory, the Schooner Tara, for schools and the general public.

The foundation’s microbiome mission engages 42 research structures around the world to study the ocean microbiome and its interactions with climate and pollution.

“With this expedition, we want to establish collaborations with the African scientific community and share the data that will be produced.

“Indeed, the availability of scientific data is an important issue for Africa to establish an inventory of the health of marine ecosystems, and take measures to protect them,” Romy Hentinger, director of the advocacy division at the Tara Ocean Foundation, said in a statement.

Having completed a similar stopover in South Africa last month, the scientific team will also make stopovers in Angola, DRC, Congo, Gambia and Senegal over the next months.
