Africa-Press – Namibia. OSHANA governor Elia Irimari says the region is ready to host The Namibian Newspaper Cup slated for 26 to 29 August.

The popular sport development tournament, powered by Standard Bank Namibia, will take place at the Oshakati Independence Stadium under the theme “Enhancing pristine sport environment”.

The local organising committee, in collaboration with the Oshakati Town Council, is improving the stadium’s playing surface, Irimari said at a media briefing yesterday.

Renovations on the netball court are already complete. The old court was replaced with a new structure, courtesy of the Namibia Correctional Service and town council, Irimari said.

“Minor renovations are still expected at the pavilions and toilets at the stadium as well as school hostels,” Irimari said, reporting on the preparation of the games venue.

According to the governor, the 14 teams will be housed at Iipumbu and Oshakati secondary schools’ hostels.

Irimari called on the business community to join forces with the organisers to complete outstanding renovations and delivering a successful tournament.

He noted that The Namibian Newspaper Cup brings not only sport to the region but it is also an opportunity for the business community.

“Hence, the call for all economic sectors in our region to prepare and take full advantage of the upcoming event. This event has a huge impact on our young people’s personal development and focus. It is an opportunity for young people to meet and network through sport,” Irimari said.
