Africa-Press – Namibia. THE Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) has banned non priority-travel for its local authority and regional councillors, with immediate effect.
According to a media release from IPC national general secretary Christine Esperanza !Aochamus yesterday, councillors are not allowed to travel for familiarisation visits, expos and trade fairs, or for the signing of agreements.
!Aochamus said the party’s 72 regional and local authority councillors are allowed to travel when attending meetings or training sessions organised by the minister or Ministry of Urban and Rural Development, or any other professional training entity intended to enhance service delivery.
!Aochamus said councillors are encouraged to focus on the core business of the council, which is service delivery to residents.
“Councillors must ensure that no unnecessary expenditure is incurred, and to refrain from participating and authorising non-priority activities, other than direct service delivery,” she said.
This is not the first time the IPC bans its public office-bearers from participating in non-essential travel.
In February last year, the IPC also ordered its councillors to avoid taking part in non priority travel as their primary responsibility is service delivery.
“Guard against favouritism, nepotism and receiving rewards and gifts in return for business opportunities,” she said last year.
Any councillor who fails to comply with the directive will be recalled from their positions, !Aochamus said.
