Africa-Press – Namibia. DESCENDANTS of genocide victims will convene at Okahandja this weekend with the intention to collectively declare the German-Namibian Joint Declaration on Reconciliation and Reconstruction invalid and illegitimate.
The Secretary-General of the Ovaherero Traditional Authority, Mutjinde Katjiua, said the planned event has attracted various speakers from different traditional authorities and non-governmental organisations.
The theme of the gatherings is “Reasons for rejecting the Joint Declaration”. Representatives from political parties such as the PDM, Nudo, IPC, RDP, Swanu and LPM are also expected to partake in the event.
Affected communities living in the diaspora, including South Africa, Botswana, the United States of America, and Germany, will also air their dissatisfaction with the bilateral development agreement.
Katjiua noted that various topics, such as the historicity and politics of the Ovaherero-Nama genocide; the social, cultural and economic destruction of the Ovaherero and Nama people; the revival of dignity and self-representation; the traumatic and psychological effects of genocide and healing; the position of the diaspora communities; and petitions to the Namibian government, to Germany and to the UN will be elaborated on.
According to Katjiua, the event was moved to Okahandja as the ex-combatants and children of the liberation struggle are meeting in Windhoek this weekend.
