PRESIDENT Hage Geingob has extended his condolences to the family of the long-serving prime minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe, who was gunned down in Japan during a public speech on 8 July by an unidentified gunman.
“It is with utmost shock and sadness that I have learned of the assassination, in the city of Nara on July 8 2022, of His Excellency Shinzo Abe, former Prime Minister of Japan,” Geingob said in a press statement.
The president further narrated past visits held with the deceased Abe, sharing that he recalls with fondness, the cordial, one-on-one meeting he had with the Prime Minister Abe during his visit to Yokohama in 2019, when he attended the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) and they both reaffirmed their commitment to enhance Japan-Namibia bilateral relations.
“Indeed, we will remember Prime Minister Abe as a true friend of Namibia who exuded the characteristics of friendship, solidarity and respect, which define the relationship between the Namibia and Japan. We therefore join the Japanese people, during this dark hour, in mourning a committed, respected and astute statesman, whose presence will be sorely missed both in Japan and the world at large,” Geingob said.
The president added that his thoughts and prayers are particularly with the wife of the departed minister, Madam Akie Abe, at this difficult moment.
