Africa-Press – Namibia. SINCE the announcement of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) recruitment programme, there has been a drastic increase in the number of Johnson & Johnson (J&J) Covid-19 vaccinations administered daily.
Between 12 and 13 July, over 5 000 J&J doses were administered in the country.
The Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs recently announced its drive to recruit 1 500 new members of the NDF.
Between 7 July, when the announcement was made, and Tuesday, over 2 600 J&J vaccinations have been administered in the country.
Some 1 569 people were vaccinated in the Oshana region on Wednesday, while 1 024 were vaccinated in the Khomas region.
The Ohangwena region recorded the third-highest number of vaccinations, with 802.
This is according to the Ministry of Health and Social Service’s daily Covid-19 vaccination report.
Before this announcement, the country has been struggling to vaccinate over 20% of its population.
The NDF applicants are required to be vaccinated against Covid-19, and the J&J vaccine is currently the only single-dose Covid-19 vaccine available in Namibia.
The NDF has defended its vaccination requirement, stating that due to the environment in which recruits are trained, often sleeping in overcrowded tents and marching closely to one another, it is imperative that they are vaccinated.
