PROTECTING flora and fauna is the citizens’ responsibility, says Omusati Regional Governor Erginus Endjala.
He was speaking during his annual State of the Region Address at Outapi on Wednesday.
He revealed that a total of 17 cases of veld fire were reported in the region during the financial year 2021/22.
Endjala stated that the respective veld fires were extinguished thanks to a join effort of forestry officials, the Namibian police, the Namibian Defence Force, and members of local communities, but the damage was already done. Several hectares of grazing land were destroyed and the loss of big and small livestock was reported as a result.
He mentioned specifically a total of 32 goats that were lost in a veld fire in the Otamanzi constituency.
Endjala indicated that, at the moment, public awareness is the only effective preventive measure for veld fires.
The governor is exhorting members of the public to always take precautions when handling fire, be it for domestic use or for other purposes.
“Veld fires destroy the pasture, the flora and animal species. They cause deforestation and soil erosion,” he said.
