Africa-Press – Namibia. RISTO Nuuyoma, a 45-year-old resident of the Ondangwa village west of Oshakati, died instantly when he fell off a tall makalani palm tree while gathering its nutritious fruits.
The incident occurred in the Oshuulo village at around 11:30 on Saturday.
According to the police, the body was transported to the Oshakati police mortuary and a post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the actual cause of death.
Makalani palm fruits are sought after because of their nutrition and are also used to produce a distilled liquor locally known as ombike.
Inspector Thomas Aiyambo is warning community members against the danger of climbing palm trees without protective gear that would ensure some kind of safety.
